This week on Matcha Mornings, Amanda is joined by Stephanie Stickley. Stephanie is a powerlifting coach and a nutritionist. On this episode, Stephanie and I dive into health and wellness, why weightlifting can be great for the body, and nutrition. We also dive into how to build up our immune systems! During the current global pandemic, we need to boost our immune systems more than ever, and Stephanie will give you tips on how to do that, as well as health and wellness tips to apply to your day-to-day life.
As with all episodes where we discuss nutrition, I just want to remind you that everything we’re talking about is opinion-based. It’s an invitation to learn, but if something doesn’t feel right based on your body or your beliefs, please make sure you listen to that.
Enjoy!
Notes from this Episode:
- How Stephanie fell in love with powerlifting
- Why we’re never “too old” to discover a new passion
- Why it’s important to stay active and life weights as we age
- Powerlifting is a lot of movements that we do in our regular life and they are movements that are important to know how to do (ex. Sitting on the toilet is like squatting!)
- If you aren’t feeling good day-to-day, it might be your nutrition and the quality of what you’re eating
- If you are exercising, it’s important to make sure you are eating enough and getting enough protein
- Eating regularly is important! Eating enough protein is important!
- So much of our mood, our energy, and our overall health and wellbeing has to do with the food that we consume and how we nourish ourselves
- If you want to create good eating habits, start by adding in breakfast, even if it’s a protein shake
- Once you start to eat more regularly, you will become hungrier and it will get easier to eat consistently
- We should not walk around hungry or be in starvation mode! That makes our body stressed.
- We need to look at health and wellness from a holistic perspective and look at all areas of our lives – what do you eat? Do you take a vitamin? How much protein do you eat? Do you spend time outside? How much do you sleep? How much water do you drink?
- Western Medicine is great and it serves an amazing purpose, but we also need fewer people just taking prescriptions for every ailment. There are a lot of factors in our health and how we feel.
- How health and wellness can be more accessible and more affordable
- Purchasing whole foods is much more affordable than buying processed foods
- Be aware of where you’re shopping – there are different supermarkets that can give you better prices on certain foods
- One of the things we need to be paying attention to when it comes to building up our immune systems is protein
- If your lifestyle is sedentary, you want to make sure you consume 0.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight. If you are more active, you need to consume 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight per day.
- When you are trying to build up your immune system, taking a multivitamin is important so that you can add in macronutrients that you don’t get through your food
- Drink enough water!
- Sleep enough and make sure you are resting yourself
- Stress makes us sick so it’s important to manage your stress levels
- Why we need to keep socializing during our self-isolation time
- And much more… Here’s the episode!
